What have been the keys to your success? (Do you keep a food log? Do you count carbs or calories or portions?)
1- Shelley gave me a metabolism check at the beginning to determine how many calories I need per day. 2- I log all my food daily. 3- I joined Overeaters Anonymous.(I found out about Rebecca Bitzer through an OA contact.) 4- I exercise at least 6 days per week. 5- Shelly showed me portion sizes and helped me with what to eat, when to eat it, and the size of portion I should eat. 6- I weigh my meats that I eat.
What is your exercise routine?
Cardio at least 4 days per week. Weight training 2 or 3 days per week. I am now doing a wide variety of exercise. Recumbent Bike, aerobics, walking, swimming and still looking for more to do.
Have you seen health benefits from your progress?
Since seeing Shelley I have lost approx. 20lbs and finally reached my target weight. When I first saw Shelley I had lost some 25 lbs on my own and was basically starving myself and had very bad eating habits. I was on two blood pressure medicines when I began seeing Shelly and now my blood pressure is 110 over 70 in both arms with no meds. I have more energy, I am hardly ever hungry, In spite of pushing 60 yrs in age I feel amazingly good.
What has changed in your life since you have lost weight (i.e. clothes sizes, energy levels, activity abilities, aches/ pains, etc?)
I have gone from size 38 waste to size 33 waste since august of 2008. I was experiencing some aches from exercising and Shelly referred me to a trainer who gave me some guidance in my weight training and proper stretching and I have had no aches or pains since.
What keeps you coming to your appointments?
I keep coming for appointments so that Shelley can monitor my eating habits and notice any changes that need to be corrected. She always suggests new foods for me to try and tells me items to avoid.
How do you handle stressful situations?
I don’t turn to food anymore. I go to an OA meeting, or call a friend, exercise, and work through the problem.
How do you deal with food cravings?
Because of the plan of eating Shelley has helped me to develop I rarely ever have any food cravings. When I was new I used to get really hungry around six o’clock at night and Shelley helped me work through this with having a healthy snack between lunch and dinner.
What is the biggest change you have made in the last year?
I am now eating to live and not living to eat. I am a compulsive overeater and am taking the necessary steps to become a normal eater, and I now weigh what I weighed in 11th grade. Hardly a week goes by when an old acquaintance doesn’t recognize me because I look so much better than I did when I was obese.
What advice do you have for those seeking weight loss?
My first response to anyone is to go to a nutritionist, and if you are a compulsive overeater join Overeaters Anonymous and do what they tell you to do!!!!
Additional comments:
I am extremely grateful for the help and guidance I have received from my dietician (Shelley), and do not believe that I could have accomplished the achievements I have mentioned above without it. Thank You Shelley!!!!!
Congratulations Mickey. Glad to hear that Shelley and OA have helped you so much.
