Here is an inspiring story of how Rebecca helped this client overcome her disordered eating.
Cary started seeing Rebecca in 11th grade because she had changed her eating habits to be healthier, but ending up eating mainly fruits and vegetables and cutting out fats and other junk food. At this time, Cary was a very active ice skater and this combined with her new pattern of eating resulted in a dramatic weight loss. She got to the point where every time she weighed herself, the number always had to be lower than the last time; she saw a reflection in the mirror that was different from what everyone else was seeing.
Cary went to the doctor for physical and he was concerned about her weight. He referred her to Rebecca for help with this problem. Cary would go to Rebecca’s office 2 or 3 times a week after school. Cary immediately connected with Rebecca and trusted everything she said. Rebecca set up an eating plan for Cary helping her with when and what to eat, and Cary followed it exactly. It took about one year for Cary to get back to a healthy weight. She continued to see Rebecca for another year to work on maintaining that weight.
After two years in college, Cary went back to Rebecca because she was again concerned about her eating habits and weight. She was again being restrictive with her eating and her weight was more than she wanted it to be. Rebecca helped her realize it was okay that her body weight was a little higher since she was older and they talked through topics like emotional eating, eating in moderation, healthy fats, etc. Besides helping Cary with her eating habits, Rebecca was also a means of emotional support and an excellent listener.
Cary, who is now 25, is at a healthy body weight and has the knowledge and confidence to manage on her own pattern of eating. She is conscious of what she eats, exercises frequently and realizes she can eat out every once in a while and make healthier choices. Although she is still critical of her body weight and eating healthy, she is not as hard on herself for not being so restrictive.
Cary stated that the hardest part of this journey was transitioning from being such a restrictive, calorie-counting eater to letting someone else guide her eating habits. This situation started out as a way of being in control, however, she really trusted Rebecca and did exactly what she said, which was actually a relief, because then she didn’t have to stress over what she was going to eat. It was also difficult attending functions or eating out, but with Rebecca’s help she learned to plan ahead.
The key to Cary’s success was her great family support and her trust in Rebecca. “Rebecca has a lot of experience and guidance and the perfect soft tone to her voice; she understands and listens very well”.
She advises anyone in this situation to see a nutritionist. It is what got her through this tough stage of her life. She explained that this way of thinking regarding food and body image comes on slowly and then spins out of control, and you need guidance and support to help get your life back.
Thanks Cary for sharing, we are so grateful and proud.
I love this positive upbeat success story. It is such a generous thing to share your experience, I am inspired by your perseverance and results. Your mention of Rebecca’s soft tone voice really struck me. I agree. And says to me again, how every detail plays an important role in recovery. What a wonderful photo!
