Plaza Celebrate Food Day with Fresh, Locally-grown Food and Fun

October 24 Event to Highlight Nutrition, Affordability, and Sustainability

WASHINGTON, DC—The District of Columbia Metro Area Dietetic Association (DCMADA) and Central Harvest on the Plaza (CHOP) will host a special farmer’s market in honor of Food Day in the District of Columbia, as declared by Mayor Vincent Gray. The event will take place on Monday, October 24, 2011 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Woodrow Wilson Plaza, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.

The event will feature cooking demonstrations and food tastings by DC’s best chefs, inclucing Todd Gray of Equinox, Jason Maddens of Central, Frederick De Pue of Smith Commons and Xavier Deshayes of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. Members of DCMADA from a wide array of organizations throughout the city will be onhand to provide nutrition education activities, food demonstrations, and breastfeeding education (provided by WIC). The event is open to the public. Most importantly, many Washington, DC public school students will attend the event to learn about the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables and to taste fresh, locally-grown produce.

“Our Food Day event will be a unique opportunity for area children and families to learn about easy-to- prepare healthy foods in a festive environment,” said Katherine Tallmadge, MA, RD,LD, President of DCMADA. “By making the experience fun and providing many options, we aim to simplify healthy eating for all who attend.”

DCMADA’s Food Day Event is sponsored by the American Dietetic Association. DCMADA, ADA, and Food Day” share the common goals of: 1) reducing diet -related disease by promoting safe, healthy food choices; and 2) expanding access to food and alleviating hunger.
