Medicare and Nutrition Counseling in Maryland
Medicare will cover nutritional counseling with one of our Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) when a diagnosis of Type II Diabetes and/or Renal (Kidney) disease is present. If you have never seen a dietitian before, Medicare will cover 5 nutrition appointments*. If you have seen a dietitian in the past (whether it is in our office, or in another setting), Medicare covers 4 nutrition appointments per year*. Medicare must be listed as your primary insurance in order to receive these nutrition benefits.
* This is dependent on the length of each appointment. Generally, the initial appointment is 1 hour, and all follow-up appointments are 30 minutes. Length of the appointment will be determined as appropriate by your RDN.
What if I want to be seen, but I do not have a diagnosis of Diabetes or Renal disease?
Our RDNs are here to help! If you have another insurance as a secondary plan that we are in network with we can use that insurance as long as they provide coverage for your diagnosis. If you would like to be seen at RBA without one of the previously mentioned diagnoses, we offer a self-pay package at a senior discount of 3 visits for $180.
What if I have another insurance policy in addition to Medicare?
We are in network with Carefirst/Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cigna. If you have a diagnosis that is covered under those plans, but not under Medicare, we would be able to bill your secondary insurance for coverage. Please visit the Carefirst/Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cigna for more information.
